When the hot summer sun is blazing, nothing cools you down quite like a sweet, frozen, icy popsicle treat. If you grew up in the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, you surely remember “Suck Suck.” They are also commonly called “bag juice” or “sky juice.” Here in the United States, they are similar to the popsicles or icy pops they sell in the grocery stores.
These brightly colored frozen bag juice popsicles provided instant relief and pure joy. However, suck-suck is made with artificial fruit-flavored corn syrup that was diluted in water and then frozen. Sometimes, lime juice is mixed in for added flavor.
The problem is that store-bought icy pops or traditional suck suck are empty calories and loaded with sugar. Too much sugar consumption is bad for children and adults alike.
Why Are These Caribbean Bag Fruit Juices Called “SUCK SUCK?”
Growing up, I heard people nickname these popsicle coolers “suck suck.” I believe it is derived from the experience of drinking one of these bag juices on a hot summer day.
As the ice melts, children will repeatedly suck through the opening, made either using a scissors or their bare teeth, to get the melted juice from the bag. The repeated sucking motion, I believe, gave rise to the moniker “suck suck.”
Healthier Suck Suck Bag Juices
In this recipe blog, we take a nostalgic approach and give the traditional “Suck Suck” a healthy, homemade makeover!
These bag juice coolers are made with real fruits and no artificial dyes, are easy to make, and are ideal for kids, backyard BBQs, or any other occasion when you need to relax and cool off.
Whether you name them ice pops, juice bags, bag juice, Suck Suck, or popsicles, one thing is certain: they are a refreshingly healthier way to beat the heat!

Prepare the Lime and Ginger Juice

Let's Make Kiwi Lime Suck Suck Bag Juice
- Wash the kiwis with a vegetable brush under warm running water. Cut them into cubes while they still have their skin. In a blender, combine cubed kiwis and 2½ cups of water. Blend on high until completely smooth.

- Transfer the blended fruit mixture to a cheesecloth or nut milk bag. You may also use a strainer.Make sure your hands are clean. With your clean hands, carefully squeeze out the juice into a bowl. Discard the pulp or add it to your compost bin.

- Pour 1½ cups of the melon ginger juice into the sandwich bags, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top.Knot and seal the tops securely and place them in the freezer to freeze for at least 5 hours or until solid. You may also pour some of the mixture into a popsicle mold and freeze for a delicious popsicle treat.

- Serve the melon and kiwi "suck suck"he bag juice as a snack or a cooler on a hot summer day. Use a pair of scissors to cut one end of the bag juice. As the fruit-ice melts, suck the juice, beat the heat, and enjoy the refreshing flavors.
