Cubana Cafe NYC

The  Cubana Cafe Restaurant in Brooklyn, New York provides an authentic Cuban cuisine experience. The cafe serves non-traditional breakfast items that are iconic to the Cuban culture. In addition, the ambiance showcases the authenticity of the Cuban Culture. The restaurant is ideal for having breakfast, brunch, an evening night out with friends or family. Moreover, the restaurant has a bar area and therefore serves some very unusual alcoholic beverages.

Cuban Cuisine: Rice Beans and Plantains

Plantains and Rice served with bean are a stable in the Cuban Cuisine. The food culture of a country or geographic location  reflects what are most abundant and easily available. The heart of a culture is centered around the food that is eaten. In Cuba and many other Spanish countries, Rice, Beans and Plantains offer comfort and sustenance as a side dish to many meals.

Lets highlight a few menu items.

Egg Omelette
Plantain Chips with dipping sauce

Plantains for breakfast is very common in most Caribbean cuisines. Firstly, plantains are cheap. Secondly they grow in abundance and thirdly, they are easily available. As a result, many restaurants, for example Cubana Cafe, uses ripe and green plantains in a number of their menu items. Similarly, this starchy fruit are sold as commercial snack items at some grocery stores. However, the ripen plantains are also a tasty sweet treat.

Pressed Green Plantains

Tostones or what most Jamaicans call ” Pressed Green Plantains” is my favoring way to eat green plantains. I remember my mom use a heavy liquor glass bottle to press the plantains when she make tostones. Today we have access to fancy Green Plantain Smashers  . They are inexpensive and sold in many grocery and online stores. It is apparent that most Cuban restaurants serve their tostones with a dipping sauce such as mango chutney. However, i enjoy then with just a sprinkle of salt.
