Hawksbill Resort St. John’s Antigua: Is This All-Inclusive Beachfront Gem Worth It?

Posted on September 27, 2026September 27, 2026 by Kevin Foodie

Antigua is legendary for its 365 white-sand beaches, one for every day of the year. During my recent stay at Hawksbill Resort in St. John’s, I experienced four of them right outside my door. Tucked away on the island’s tranquil western coast, this secluded retreat offers the perfect blend of soothing ocean breezes, vibrant Caribbean color, and pure relaxation in nature.

From catching panoramic sunsets at Shirley Heights to diving into local water sports and enjoying Antigua’s food culture, my time at Hawksbill was an unforgettable island escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Whether you are planning your first trip to Antigua or looking for your next serene getaway, here is my complete review and guide to everything Hawksbill Resort and St. John’s have to offer. By the end of the blog, you will be able to decide if this all-inclusive resort is worth it.

Please share your thoughts in the comments section at the end of this blog.

Where Is Antigua?

Antigua is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is the main island of the independent, dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

Antigua is about 250 miles southwest of Puerto Rico and 30 miles from its sister island, Barbuda, which lies just north of Guadeloupe.

The country’s Capital and largest city is St. John’s, located on the northwestern coast of Antigua.

The Hawksbill Resort is located in St. John. It sits on 37 acres along the Five Islands Peninsula.

The property stretches across four secluded, crescent-shaped beaches, including the naked beach called Eden Beach.

How Did hawskbill Resort get its name?

You might be wondering how the resort got its unique name. Hawksbill Resort is named after the distinct, hawk-like rock formation jutting out of the ocean right off the coastline, which resembles the head and beak of a Hawksbill Sea Turtle.

These endangered sea turtles are native to Antigua’s warm Caribbean waters, and if you keep an eye on the waves while lounging on the beach or during your water sport activity, you might even spot one swimming nearby.

From the picture below, I see a bear's head. What do you see?

is this
all-inclusive Resort worth it?

This was my first trip to Antigua, and while browsing through countless options on Expedia, Hawksbill Resort instantly stood out.

Unlike the typical sprawling mega-resorts, Hawksbill felt more like an intimate boutique hotel, just on a much grander scale.

The ultimate highlight, however, was staying in one of their beachfront bungalows, which made the experience truly unforgettable.

Hawksbill Resort Size and Units.

Hawksbill Resort Antigua is a laid-back, adults-oriented all-inclusive paradise nestled on the island’s Five Islands Peninsula in St. John’s parish. This Caribbean getaway is surrounded by untouched natural beauty. So if you are a nature lover, this spot deserves a top place on your bucket list.

This boutique property houses about 106 air-conditioned units spread across 37 tropical acres and four magnificent, secluded beaches, including Eden Beach, Antigua’s famous clothing-optional beach shore.

The Beachfront Bungalow Experience.

Staying in one of their Beachfront Bungalows,  I was steps away from the beautiful golden sand beach. Located along Sea Grapes Beach, these single-story units open onto a private furnished veranda (porch) with direct beach access.

Even though I do not care for it, there are no televisions in these units. I believe they were intentionally designed without televisions (TV) to offer guests an uninterrupted, unplugged experience. But if you require a room with television, you may choose one of their standard rooms with a smart TV.

However, there is nothing more relaxing than waking up and falling asleep to the ocean waves crashing on the shores or sitting on the veranda taking in the panoramic views of the ocean and lush green mountains.

Hawksbill Resort Room Features.

All of the units seem to feature a private balcony or veranda. The beachfront bungalow verandas, in particular, are furnished with a table, chairs, and loungers.

I like that they use zinc roof to cover the veranda. Hearing the beating of the rain on them was very nostalgic and brought me back to my childhood days in Jamaica.

Each bungalow has a bucket with water, I guess, to wash off the sand from the guests’ feet before entering the bungalow. However, the whistling ducks that take up residence on the property use it to quench their thirst from the hot, raging heat.

What’s Inside The Room?

Inside, the rooms come with either single or double beds, air conditioning, ceiling fans, standard bathrooms, a chest of drawers, a closet with an ironing board and iron, a daily restocked refrigerator (with water and drinks), an electric kettle, coffee, tea, creamers, sweeteners, a computer desk and chair, and free Wi-Fi in both the rooms and common areas.

Apart from the bathroom being a bit small, the room was very comfortable. I loved the wall-to-wall windows, which allowed me to pull back the privacy curtains and enjoy sweeping beachfront and ocean views right from the comfort of the bed. Even the bathroom offered a beautiful view of the ocean.

Hawsbill Dinning (All-inclusive)

Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review
Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review

The resort offers 3 meals daily (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and unlimited alcoholic beverages. However, the menu options are a bit limited compared to larger chain resorts. However, there are three dining halls:

(1) Hawksbill Tamarind Tree Dining Hall:

It did not take long to figure out where this spot got its name. Stand right outside the dining hall, and you will spot a huge tamarind tree loaded with fruit.

As someone who grew up loving tamarind in Jamaica, I was excited, but sadly these were still green.

Trust me, eating them unripe is incredibly sour and guaranteed to give your tastebuds an unpleasant shock. However, when they are ripe, the egg-like shell pod can be easily cracked open to reveal the sweet dark brown fruit that encapsulated the black seeds.

This spot is an open-air buffet-style dining experience that offers international and Caribbean menu options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It also offers weekly themed Antiguan BBQ nights and live evening entertainment. If you eat pork, you must try their BBQ pig’s tail. It sounds crazy, but do not knock it until you try it.

Unfortunately, Antigua’s national dish (Pepperpot and Fungee) was not served. However, I met with the chef, and he assured me that I can place a request and the dish could have been prepared. I will bear that in mind for the next trip.

(2) Sea Grapes Bar & Grill:

Offers casual, beachside dining with à la carte lunches, evening meals, light bites, and full bar service. This is a perfect spot for beachfront dining, especially at lunchtime.

Nothing beats eating by the beach, enjoying the unlimited blue sea breeze.

(3) Hawksbill PD’s Restaurant: The Great House:

This was easily one of my favorite spots, and many fellow guests I chatted with felt the same. The restaurant specializes in a delicious à la carte lunch served daily from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm (reservations are required). However, if you visit outside of lunch hours, no reservation is needed. Whatever you do, do not miss their BBQ ribs with grilled corn; they were absolutely incredible.

Dining With Beautiful Beach Views

In addition to the great food, dining next to the beach overlooking the ocean and mountainside is one of the best relaxation experiences. I learned from the chef that the restaurant was originally the house of the owner of the resort property. After he died, the property was bought by investors; the restaurant was named after him in his honor. The restaurant is small and intimate, so make sure you book in advance the days you plan on dining.

The staff at Hawksbill Resort were exceptionally warm, welcoming, and attentive. While tipping is not mandatory, I highly encourage leaving a small gratuity for your servers after each meal. As the saying goes, “Encouragement Sweetens Labor!”

Water ACTIVITIES & Beach Vibes: HAwksbill resort

Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review

Staying at Hawksbill Resort Antigua, the tranquil Caribbean turquoise waters, for me, are the main event. Whether you want to quietly glide along the shoreline or add a splash of adrenaline to your beach day, the resort’s water sports setup gives you the best of both worlds.

Here is a breakdown of all the water activities available, including what’s covered in your stay and what comes with an additional cost.

Complimentary Water Sports (Included in Your Stay)

One of the best perks of Hawksbill’s all-inclusive experience is free access to non-motorized water sports right off the beach. You can gear up and head straight out on one of the calm beach days.

Kayaking:

Double and single kayaks are available to paddle along the four crescent beaches, giving you a beautiful perspective of the resort’s lush coastline. A great way to burn some calories after breakfast or lunch.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP):

Perfect for early morning sessions when the water is crystal-clear and calm, especially if you are not an expert or experienced.

Snorkeling:

Grab complimentary fins, masks, and snorkels to explore the clear shallows and natural rock formations around the bay.

Hobie Cat Sailing:

For an unforgettable time on the water, you must experience the Hobie Cat and let the gentle Caribbean breeze do the work. Pro tip: look for Gerald over by the beach towel house! He’s a resort staff member and an expert sailor who will guide you on a fantastic sail around the property. Don’t forget to slide him a nice tip for his stellar service.

Jet Ski:

For $70 USD, you can rent a jet ski right from the beach for a fun, 30-minute adrenaline rush. Payments are quick and convenient, as they accept both cash and major credit cards.

Boat Charters & Catamaran Excursions:

If you are looking to get out on the water, book an island cruise, sunset sail, or coastal snorkel tour right from the resort. For around $130 USD per person, you get roughly 6 hours of sailing, snorkeling colorful reefs, visits to other parts of the island, delicious food, and an open bar. It’s an adventure you definitely want to add to your Antigua itinerary.

Water Sport Tip:

If you’re planning your itinerary, save your complimentary non-motorized sports (paddle board and canoe) for the morning hours when the ocean is at its calmest, and the wind is gentle. For paid excursions like jet skis or boat tours,  book through the hotel’s excursion desk to ensure reliable service.

A quick heads-up about Antigua’s beaches:

By law, all beaches on the island are public. While this open culture is fantastic, it also means local vendors or residents can walk the shores.

You may run into one or two guys who pretend to be affiliated with the resort to pitch you water sports or island tours. They can be quite persistent, and while it’s just local hustle, I always recommend booking excursions directly through the hotel. It keeps your plans secure and ensures you are going with verified operators.

Hawsbill’s Infinity Pool:

Secure a beach chair and umbrella by the Hawksbill infinity pool, order a refreshing cocktail from the server, and relax while soaking in the breathtaking ocean views. If the Caribbean sun gets too hot, just dive right in for a refreshing swim.

Resort Table/Court Tennis:

Looking to stay active? The resort features a tennis court as well as table tennis. Grab a paddle and challenge a fellow guest to a friendly game.

Antigua's currency

Antiguan $5 bill

Antigua uses the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD), which is officially pegged to the US Dollar.

1 XCD = ~ 0.37 USD

1 USD = 2.70 XCD (fixed official rate)

US Dollars are widely accepted across Antigua, but change is usually given back in East Caribbean Dollars.

Travel Essentials For the Tropics.

PROTECT  YOUR FEET:I usually recommend that beachgoers cover their feet with these Beach Shoes I ordered on Amazon. They provide foot protection while also being lightweight. and comfortable.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM UV RAYS: More importantly, please apply sunscreen on your face and body. I learned the hard way and got burned on my face ans body. I recommend the Hawaiian Tropic Sunscreen SPF 70 lotion and Keihl’s SPF 30 sun protection face cream.

SHADE YOUR EYES: A waterproof and sandproof Beach Blanket and polarized UV400 protection Sunglasses are essential on any beach day.

COOL OFF THE HEAT: Antigua is very humid. This portable rechargeable handheld fan will help you cool off.

HYDRATE THE BODY: Hydration is key when you spend a long time on the beach. Make sure you carry a thermal water bottle like this 64-ounce stainless steel thermal water bottle from Amazon.

PROTECT YOUR PHONE: Protect your phone while in the water and to make sure you capture memorable moments, you must get this waterproof phone pouch like this one HERE.

Sunset, Steel Pans, and Island Vibes: Why You Can't Miss Shirley Heights, Antigua.
Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review SHIRLEY HEIGHTS

If you can only add one non-negotiable experience to your Antigua itinerary, it’s taking in the breathtaking views from Shirley Heights. Perched nearly 500 feet above English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, this restored 18th-century military lookout offers what many consider the Caribbean’s most iconic panorama.

While the historic stone ruins and sweeping ocean vistas are impressive any day of the week, Shirley Heights truly comes alive during its world-famous sunset parties.

Antigua’s Sunday Afternoon Lime:

Every Sunday afternoon, locals and travelers gather at the lookout for Antigua’s biggest weekly celebration. As the sun begins to set, the rhythmic notes of live steel pan bands ring across the courtyard, filling the air with authentic Caribbean melodies.

As day turns into night, the tempo ramps up with live reggae and soca bands, turning the stone terrace into an energetic outdoor dance floor.

What To Expect At Shirley Heights:

Breathtaking Unobstructed Views: Take in the stunning views of luxury yachts glistening in English Harbour. The sunset here is a true sight to behold and an absolute must-capture for your vacation or Instagram photos.

For Foodies: The lookout serves up classic Caribbean BBQ, with menu options like jerk chicken, jerk pork, tender ribs, and grilled seafood.

Do not forget to grab their signature tropical rum punch. As I was warned by one of the Hawkbill’s servers: just go easy on it because that punch is a real creeper and will definitely catch you off guard and push you over the edge.

As a foodie, I had to try the jerk pork with rice and peas. While the meat was packed with flavor, it was more of a stewed pork dish rather than authentic, smoke-grilled jerk pork we make in Jamaica.

Music Lovers: Shirley Heights offers a vibrant transition from relaxing golden-hour steel pan performances when I first entered to high-energy live bands playing Caribbean and international hits late into the evening. All you need is a drink in your hand and dance the night away to some good Caribbean music.

Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review SHIRLEY HEIGHTS

Here Are Some Quick Shirley Heights Tips:

(1) Arrive Early: The party officially kicks off in the late afternoon (around 4:30 PM). Arrive early to secure a prime spot along the lookout railing before the crowds gather for sunset photos.

(2) Wear Comfortable Shoes: The courtyard features historic stone and cobblestone terrain, so leave the high heels behind and opt for stylish flats, sneakers, or comfortable sandals.

Bring a small towel/rag to dry the beads of sweat from your face and neck. For someone who loves the heat, I can truly say that the humidity is no joke in Antigua.

(3)Bring Cash: Admission entrance fees are $10 USD, and extra drink orders often move faster when paying with cash.

(4) Odd Travel Days: When you travel to the Caribbean, try to make sure Friday to Sunday are included in your stay. These are the days when all the entertainment fun resides.

But if your travel dates do not line up with Sunday during your Antigua travel, check out “Reggae Heights” on Thursday evenings for a similar BBQ, live music, and sunset experience with a slightly more relaxed crowd.

Whether you are visiting for the postcard-worthy sunset, the sizzle of the grill, or the live steel pan drums, a trip up to Shirley Heights is an unforgettable highlight of any Antiguan vacation.

Nature At Its BesT

Hawksbill All-inclusive Resort St. John's Antigua Review

Hawksbill Fruit Trees and Lush Nature:

The  37 acres of Hawksbill Resort with lush tropical greenery, fruit trees, flowers, and mountains offer a peaceful, nature-centric atmosphere. Here is a breakdown of what you will experience around the grounds:

Ducks and Lizards:

A charming and quirky feature of Hawksbill is the resident flock of ducks that wander freely across the lawns and near the main open-air dining areas. They are friendly, accustomed to guests, and add a sweet, homey feel to the property.

You will frequently spot small green lizards sunbathing on a stone or tropical plant.

Tropical Birds:

Keep an eye on the sky and ocean water! Brown pelicans frequently dive-bomb into the bay for fish.

Among the palm trees and flowering bushes, you will spot bright bananaquits (Antigua’s national bird), sugarbirds, and tiny hummingbirds darting between the flowers.

Here is a resort tip: Staying at this resort will immerse you in nature. Grab a cup of coffee from your room, sit out on your veranda/balcony and take in the greenery, or take a quiet stroll down to the beach, and you will have the gentle trade winds, singing birds, and roaming ducks all to yourself before the day warms up and the beach gets crowded.

As night falls, the air comes alive with the soothing chorus of chirping crickets. It’s a nostalgic melody that brings back fond memories of my time in Jamaica.

What is The Best Time To Visit Antigua?

jetblue flight from cancun

Antigua is an incredible vacation destination, but the humidity during the summer months can get a bit uncomfortable. I love the heat, but the high humity had me sweating like a hog. That is why having a good PORTABLE FAN in your beach bag or around your neck is a total lifesaver.

However, if you want to dodge the high humidity altogether, enjoy refreshing trade winds, and immerse yourself in vibrant local celebrations, the right timing of your trip makes all the difference. Here are some of the things I learned:

Best Weather: Low Humidity & Ideal Sunshine (December to April)

For peak tropical comfort, plan your trip between December and April. This is Antigua’s official dry season. Expect endless sunny days, comfortably warm temperatures hovering around 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C), and very low humidity.

As with most Caribbean Islands, Antigua is cooled by steady northeast trade winds during these months, making outdoor dining, beach hopping, and hiking completely effortless without feeling sticky.

Because the weather is at its finest, this is also peak travel season. Booking resort stays and flight arrangements early is highly recommended!

Best for Antigua Holidays & Cultural Celebrations

If you want to blend relaxation with local heritage, line up your travel dates with Antigua’s popular events:

Antigua Carnival (Late July to Early August)

Antigua’s biggest holiday celebration of the year! Marking the emancipation of slavery, this 10-day festival fills the streets of St. John’s with colorful costumed masqueraders, steel pan competitions, calypso music, and high-energy street parades.

Antigua Sailing Week (Late April to Early May)

Our driver during our trip to Shirley Heights explained that this event is one of the world’s premier regattas, bringing ocean racers, luxury yachts, and spectators from around the globe to English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. Expect thrilling boat races by day and beach parties by night.

Independence Day Celebrations (November 1st)

Visiting in late October leading up to November 1st lets you experience national pride at its highest. Enjoy local food fairs, traditional dress displays, and cultural performances across the island.

Oprah Winfrey’s Second Home

It’s easy to see why Antigua is such a magnet for the stars. In fact, celebrities like the great Oprah Winfrey, I was told, own a private, secluded mansion on the island.
